About SECC
SECC was started in 2016 on the initiative of Tesla Club Sweden. Until 2020, there were slightly different routes each year. But since then it has been run between Ystad and Haparanda, which has become a popular route. Several participants have returned over the years, and new records have been broken every year we have run this particular route.
From local car orienteering to Sweden's longest car race
SECC was already run as a simple car orientation on Söder in Stockholm in 2016. Now we run from Ystad to Haparanda.
SECC as a phenomenon began back in 2016 as a car orientation on Södermalm in Stockholm. And then it was called the Stockholm Electric Car Championship. A total of 38 electric cars participated, which is a record so far.
This was followed up in 2017 by a competition around Lake Mälaren. And this was also when the competition changed its name to the current one.
In 2018, the current route was run for the first time. However, with the start in Haparanda, and the finish in Ystad. The competition also took place at the end of November, so winter road conditions applied that time. 4 different cars competed that time. But only 2 of them finished. Tibor Blomhäll from Tesla Club Sweden came first, and set the unofficial electric car record for the route to 20 hours and 51 minutes
In 2019, only two cars competed against each other. Tibor Blomhäll from Tesla Club Sweden drove an electric car, and his duelist drove a hydrogen car. This time the journey was from Stockholm down to the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.
In 2020, at the bleak height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was barely possible to leave Sweden, and the idea of running Ystad–Haparanda again fit well within the prevailing restrictions. The competitors did not need to meet except at the start and finish. Since several of the participants were from Skåne, the race was run as Ystad–Haparanda and back. Six teams started from Ystad and six from Haparanda. In total, four teams completed both legs. Read more >>
In 2021 the format was the same, and this time 7 teams started from Ystad. 6 of these also drove all the way back from Haparanda to Ystad. Read more >>
2022 continued with the same arrangement. A total of 11 teams made it from Ystad to Haparanda. And 7 of these were also on the return trip to Skåne. Read more >>
In 2023, it was decided that the competition would only go one way. Ystad–Haparanda it became. On July 17, a record number of 14 teams set out from Ystad for the route, and just over 18 hours later the winner arrived in Haparanda. Read more >>
In 2024, the competition, once again, was only from Ystad–Haparanda. The starting point was moved to the parking lot outside Rusta/ÖoB. On July 8, 16 teams (a record again!) set off and after 18 hours and five minutes (a new record again!) the winner arrived in Haparanda. Read more >>
In 2025, we continued with the route between Ystad-Haparanda. The starting point this year was at the ICA Kvantums parking lot. On July 8, a total of 30 teams set off and in just over 17 hours and 55 minutes the winner arrived in Haparanda, in a record-breaking and super-even race. Read more >>
Now we are gearing up for a new year!
The chance to set new records and crown new champions opens up as we now invite you to join this years Swedish Electric Car Championship.
Several participants have participated multiple times, and dreams of both personal records and overall victory loom large. But above all, we end it all with a well-appreciated dinner and mingling up in Haparanda, after the finish line and some much-needed rest.
There are still many car models that have not yet been represented. New charging stations have opened up along the route, and new roads have also been completed. So there is every possibility for a new champion to be able to drive the distance in a new record time.
So if this sounds interesting, we hope you will sign up for this year's competition.
